 | Golden boy, 8, with loaded gun expelled for a year |
An 8-year-old student at a Golden elementary school will be expelled for a year for bringing a loaded gun to school, Jefferson County Schools officials said Friday.
An employee with an after-school program at Maple Grove Elementary School noticed the boy fidgeting with his lunch bag Aug. 29. Upon closer scrutiny, a handgun was found.
The staff member, with Red Rocks Community College, immediately called the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, which is investigating the incident.

 | Guardians arrested in 2003 death of baby |
Patrick Romero, 34, and Antoinette Medina were indicted Thursday in the death of Alexia Montoya, 1, in October 2003. Alexia was Medina's niece.
The couple initially had claimed Alexia hit her head on a fireplace hearth. But medical experts said that wasn't possible.
Alexia's head was injured "in at least three planes and not consistent with just one blow to the head such as would occur in a fall," according to the indictment.

Aurora police responding to reports of a fight and gunshots found a fatally wounded young man in the parking lot of an apartment building about 2:30 a.m. Thursday.
The man was taken to a hospital, where he was declared dead, Aurora police Detective Bob Friel said.
The name of the victim, who appeared to be in his late teens or early 20s, was being withheld until relatives were notified.

 | Woman links suspect to SUV in Bronco killing |
A woman says she loaned the SUV used in the murder of Denver Broncos player Darrent Williams to one of the suspects hours before it was used in the killing.
In a declaration filed in federal court, the woman, Veronica Garcia, said she traded trucks that night with Willie Clark, one of four suspects in the unsolved murder.
The truck Garcia gave Clark was the white Chevy Tahoe from which the shots were fired that killed Williams, two sources close to the case said Thursday.

 | Alert guard tips cops to big meth lab; 6 arrested |
The North Metro Drug Task Force broke up a meth lab in Northglenn on Wednesday night and is crediting an alert security guard for the original tip.
"Once they got inside, they found a pretty substantial lab," Sgt. Rick Reigenborn said of the raid on the home at East 110th Avenue and Pearl Street in Northglenn.
Six people were taken into custody, and a 9-year-old was transported to Adams County Social Services.

 | Body near canal ID'd as missing woman, 81 |
The Mesa County coroner says a body found along the main line of the Grand Valley Canal in Grand Junction is that of an 81-year-old dementia patient who'd been reported missing.
Afton Worley was last seen at her home on Saturday. She was reported as a missing person Tuesday morning when the front door of her home was found open and she could not be located.
Hours later, passers by discovered the body of a woman near the canal.

 | 12 kids, driver hurt in school bus crash with semi |
A school bus rear-ended a big rig near Yuma today and all 12 students and the bus driver were taken to the hospital with mostly minor injuries.
Emergency responders had to use power tools to extract the injured driver from the crumpled front of the bus.
The students' injuries were listed as minor to moderate, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

Aurora police responding to reports of a fight and gunshots found a fatally wounded young man in the parking lot of an apartment building about 2:30 this morning.
The man was transported to a local hospital where he was declared dead, Aurora Police detective Bob Friel said.
When police arrived at the Windsor Court apartments, 10908 E. 16th Ave., they found a large group of people in a parking lot, which was nearly enclosed by the building and by wrought-iron fencing, Friel said.

 | Man shot by intruder on neighbor's farm in Weld County |
Weld County Sheriff's deputies are looking for a man who allegedly shot a man who interrupted him in what might have been a fuel theft from a turkey farm.
Deputies said that Jacque Crawford, 38, of Hudson, saw headlights at the turkey farm near his home about 5 a.m. Wednesday. Knowing that there had been fuel thefts in the area, Crawford decided to investigate.
He walked about a quarter-mile toward a grain bin when a male in jeans and a baseball cap fired two rounds from a small-caliber gun, deputies said.
